In an interview with Whole in One Health Founder and CEO Britt Massei, she shares her drive, her passion, and her journey into the creation of the company. Whole in One Health and Massei both serve and dedicate themselves to improving the experience of women in their health journey and bridging the gaps between women and their healthcare professionals.

“Our [Whole in One Health’s] mission is really to change the world – to create a new digital health ecosystem by creating a data infrastructure with great information capabilities that will give individuals the tools to collect all their health data, understand it, and know what to do about it. I firmly believe that individuals at the core need the tools to manage their daily health, to be their best advocates when they seek care, to find the best care and to communicate best with their providers.

Prior to Whole in One Health, Massei spent 18 years as the CEO of a neuroscience research company. The shift in her career, to focus on a company initially centered around the menopausal experience stemmed from her observation that healthcare focuses more on intervention rather than prevention. Massei shares personal stories about loved ones impacted by this:

“I learned that there were a lot of things that could have been done had they understood prevention methods, had early intervention… caught it [the diseases] much earlier, and provided better treatment. That collided with my desire to figure out the research side of it. I saw that individuals don’t have the right tools and their providers often don’t have the right tools, and it was so painful seeing people go through that.”

Initially, Whole One Health’s vision was expansive – to serve “everybody everywhere.” However, as Massei explained, the realities of bootstrapping a company and leading an all-volunteer and part-time team necessitated a strategic pivot. They honed in on: women’s health, particularly the years impacted by perimenopause and postmenopause. This focus allows them to address an underserved and critical area while building a strong foundation that will expand to cater to adjacent populations and other clinical needs.

For example, Whole in One Health not only helps the demographic of menopausal women and their health providers, but also provides information for women’s social support. Massei shares how husbands don’t even know or fully understand what their wife or partner is going through, and what Whole in One can do is fill that information gap with actionable information that can help their partner’s experiences and symptoms.

Going through the trials and tribulations of creating this company and its content, makes Whole in One Health all worthwhile and meaningful as this journey has not been without its challenges. Massei discussed the five years spent bootstrapping the company and managing an all-volunteer team. The desire for funding is clear, not just for expansion, but to adequately compensate their dedicated team. With funding, Whole One Health envisions a future where they can re-expand beyond midlife women and truly serve “everybody everywhere” globally, a commitment underscored by secured trademarks in 40 countries.

What truly drives Britt Massei and Whole One Health is a profound dedication to solving significant health problems and improving the health of humanity. Massei emphasized that the primary motivation is not financial gain. Instead, it’s an intense desire to make a tangible difference in people’s lives, fueled by what Massei describes as a divine purpose.

“Our goal is always the individual and not serving healthcare but serving the needs of the person… the patient. Because the healthcare industry is so behind on understanding women, there’s such a great opportunity to really improve in that sector too. I think it’s in parallel bringing great information to women, arming them with their data and insights so that they can better understand what’s going on in light of the most current research and theories out there. Then, giving women the opportunity to participate and to contribute to improve the state of the art of clinical knowledge by sharing their stories, sharing their data with researchers. There’s so much to be learned on the research side so that we can better guide women. We can personalize their care because everybody is very unique. And then, to educate the healthcare providers to use this new knowledge and raise the standard of care.”

Britt Massei and Whole One Health are poised to significantly impact women by providing them with tools, data and insights, educating healthcare providers, and advancing research through shared stories and data – to personalize care. Their journey is a testament to the power of a clear vision, unwavering dedication, and a deep-seated desire to create a healthier future for all.
